Vinous Neal Martin - 01 Aug 20
The 2016 L’If offers blackberry, cedar and mint aromas on a nose that needs time to coalesce, but eventually reveals harmony and focus. The new oak is very well assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and pliant in the mouth, delivering gentle grip toward the creamy-textured finish. This is an extremely impressive wine from l’équipe Le Pin. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2016 L'If is 100% Merlot. The Cabernet Franc was overtaken by esca (a grapevine trunk disease) this year, so it was decided not to use it and to replant using mass selection in another part of the vineyard. Deep purple-black in color, it charges out with exuberant scents of warm black plums, boysenberries, and blackberry pie, plus hints of Chinese five spice, unsmoked cigars, and crushed rocks with a touch of dusty soil. Full-bodied, the palate is rich, velvety, and plush, delivering loads of spicy sparks and wonderful freshness, finishing long and opulent.
